Some of the previous logos and print used for the Met. Rather than reinventing the wheel,  the new logo will serve to pay homage to the many that came before it.  This is a museum steeped deeply not only in world history, but also the history and culture of New York.

An inspiration board for the new logo. This features pictures of the exterior and interior of the museum. The columns of the building are instantly recognizable, but the lines created by the newer architecture are also included. The type of works in the original Fifth Avenue location tend to be much older and they also inform the inspiration. Finally, the most recent logos, as well as the interplay of neutrals with splashes of deep colors, help to round out the inspiration.

The new mark is inspired by both The Met's Beaux-Arts original architecture and the newer additions to the building. The logo incorporates the columns found throughout, and the long clean lines from the more modern parts of the building.  Finally, two M's and an A can be seen.
